Route
to Job: Hannah
combined work with pleasure in her school years. She enjoyed
growing flowers and vegetables in her spare time and took
a plant-science option for her biology A' level.
A friend suggested College where she completed a BSc in horticulture
in June 2001. She furthered her studies with an MPhil, which
also cleared the way for a career in management.
Typical
day: "When
I arrive at 8am, I'm already planning what propagation trials
I need to do. I e-mail research on nursery crop scheduling
to tutors at Reading.
"Most of the management skills can only be picked up
while on site and I'm involved
in meetings and technical issues.
I get lots of help from an industrial supervisor, while a
tutor university guides me through my studies.
"Today
I'm looking at the growth of several crops and once a month
I go back to university to use the library and meet tutors.
Other times, I'll look at management aspects with my on-site
mentor.
"After two years I'll have an MPhil and a National Vocational
Qualification level four in management. This will prove I'm
not just a boffin, but someone with management ability."
Best
aspect of the job: "Planning,
research and being involved with management."
Worst
aspect:
"Trying to find a compromise between university and commercial
sector demands."
Ambition:"To
develop my technical skills, work in management, and maybe
run
my own consultancy."
